Camping activities for kids

The list of potential camping activities is only limited by your imagination. Here’s a sampling:

  • Frisbee
  • Kite-flying
  • Photography (try a kid-friendly Polaroid for instant gratification!)
  • Digging with a shovel/pail (designate a limited area without plants to reduce disturbance)
  • Rock collecting
  • Bubble blowing
  • Squirt guns
  • Slingshots
  • Outdoor toys, such as Melissa and Doug’s wide selection
  • Exploring with a magnifying glass and binoculars
  • Making leaf rubbings
  • Scavenger hunts
  • Junior Ranger programs in National Parks
  • Drawing
  • Keeping a nature log or trip diary
  • Balancing on logs
  • Flashlight tag
  • Craft projects, including crafts with sticks and twigs
  • Alphabet scavenger hunt (kids need to spot something with starting with each letter of the alphabet in order)
  • Biking
  • Card games
  • Building fairy houses in the woods (encourage at least loose adherence to Leave No Trace principles)
  • Book reading during down time
